Following the hit documentary The Tinder Swindler, Netflix is tapping into prankster culture once again with Shonda Rhimes’ Inventing Anna mini-series based on Anna Sorokin’s story. A woman with a $67 million trust fund uses her identity to scam hotels, restaurants, and banks and has New York’s top friends contact her for thousands of dollars on her page. (Sorokin said the legitimate business plan failed and he would never talk to anyone.)
She did nothing wrong and was flawed enough to be easily swayed by her ambition and wealth, the Sorokin Sentencing Center, an effort by Sorokin defense attorney Todd Spodek, said in Claiming hierarchy, Spodek told the hearing: “Anna was determined to do the right thing, but she couldn’t open those doors without doing the gray work of opening them.” “Everyone creates their version of what they want the world to see…everyone lies when they like…even Ana.
No one listens,” so she’s not 100 percent honest.
During the defense, Spodek performed the Frank Sinatra classic “New York, New York” and compared Sorokin to his favorite singer and actor. “This is a great new beginning,” Spodak was quoted as saying by The New York Times. “They both created a golden opportunity.”
Despite Spodek’s unusual defense, Sorokin was convicted in May 2019 on eight of 10 charges (including grand theft). Attempted extensive theft and service theft (total) 12 years in prison, but Sorokin only spent two years in prison when he was released for good behavior because I overstayed on my visa. Nearly a year later, Sorokin has not been extradited to Germany and remains in ICE custody pending the appeal.
